Methanol

Methanol (CAS No.: 67-56-1) is a structurally simple, high-volume basic organic chemical feedstock. It is primarily produced on a large scale from synthesis gas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen) via catalytic processes. Methanol is chemically reactive and can be converted into numerous high-value-added products through various reactions such as oxidation, carbonylation, dehydration, and esterification. Its single largest application is oxidation to produce formaldehyde, a crucial raw material for manufacturing resins, adhesives, engineering plastics, etc. Secondly, the methanol carbonylation process is the mainstream modern technology for producing acetic acid. Methanol is also a key feedstock for producing methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE, a gasoline additive), methylamines, methyl methacrylate (MMA), dimethyl ether (DME), among others. Additionally, methanol itself is an excellent organic solvent used in coatings, inks, etc.; serves as an antifreeze; and is an emerging energy source, used directly or indirectly in biodiesel production and fuel cells.
