Description

1,2-Propanediol (commonly known as propylene glycol, CAS No.: 57-55-6) is a cost-effective and high-performance alternative to glycerol (glycerin). Its molecule contains a chiral carbon atom, typically existing as a racemic mixture; industrially, it is produced by the hydration of propylene oxide.
In industrial applications, it is an important raw material for producing unsaturated polyester resins (UPR, used in fiberglass products, artificial marble, etc.), reacting with maleic anhydride and other components to form the resin.
In food and consumer products, owing to its excellent moisturizing properties, antimicrobial properties, and safety (GRAS status), propylene glycol is widely used as a humectant, solvent, and carrier in food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and toothpaste. In the tobacco industry, it serves as a humectant to prevent tobacco from drying and cracking; in animal feed, it acts as an energy source and mold inhibitor.
In functional fluid applications, its aqueous solutions are low-toxicity, environmentally friendly antifreeze and de-icing agents, used in food processing equipment, solar energy systems, aircraft runway de-icing, etc. It is also a starter for producing high-performance polyether polyols (used in polyurethane foam).
